A Boy Amongst Men
Gabriel Denis, a 17 year old from Matheson Ontario, is competing on the Ontario Team at the Canada Winter Games in the Paranordic Standing Category. Denis started cross country skiing three years ago and has progressed to win a Silver Medal at the Games.

Shields Collects Silver, Gorbounova Gold on Day 2 of Canada Winter Games
Andy Shields (Waterloo Region/NDCTB) picked up a silver medal in the freestyle sprint, while Erin Tribe (Team Hardwood/NDCTB) finished fourth, narrowly missing the hardware. In Para-Nordic action, Margarita Gorbounova (Kanata Nordic) picked up her second gold medal in as many days.

Mike Somppi (Lappe Nordic/NDCTB) picked up a medal for Ontario in able-bodied cross country competion in the Canada Winter Games in Halifax, Nova Scotia, Monday. Alana Thomas (Nakkertok) finished a strong fifth place. Para-Nordic athletes combined for an additional three medals.

Somppi, Thomas Take Eastern Canadian Championship Mini-Tour Titles
Mike Somppi (NDC Thunder Bay) and Alana Thomas (Nakkertok) used their distance classic skiing ability to lead all Ontario athletes at the recent Eastern Canadian Championships. Somppi finished 3rd in Open Men, while Thomas fought a tight battle to finish 5th in Open Women.

Announcement of Sports Writer Selection
Cross Country Ontario is pleased to announce the hiring of Kieran Jones to fill the recently advertised position of Sports Writer. We were really pleased with the number and the quality of the applications we received. After an initial screening, we used a review panel of our Board and staff to blind-test sample articles. Kieran will be posting his articles on the CCO website for the rest of the season, featuring the achievements of Ontario's High Performance athletes and stories of interest to our cross country skiing community. A survey has been placed on “Survey Monkey” designed to gather information from club coaches, High Performance Directors and volunteers from across the country to help in the process of clarifying site selection for the Easterns in the future. World Juniors/U-23 Champs Report - DAY 3
Today the World Junior/Under-23 Championships moved from the middle distance into the classic sprint competition. In the Junior Women’s field, Canada qualified 2 women, but both were eliminated in the ¼ finals. Andy Shields missed qualification by 0.19 seconds; and finished the day in 31st position.   Story

NDC member Andy Shields proved once again today that he is Canada's number one junior distance racer. Finishing 49th in a field of 103 skiers, Shields was the top Canadian in Otepaa, Estonia over the 10km skate course. Full Story

NDC's Michael Somppi proved Thursday that he can ski with the best in the world. Finishing an impressive 14th in a field of 68 in the 15km skate race, Michael showed he is in top form for these championship races being held in Otepaa, Estonia.

Revised CCO Criminal Record Screening Policy
CCO has updated its Criminal Record Screening Policy. Every Provincial Sport Organization requires their leaders who work with members of vulnerable sectors (youth, elderly and people with a disability) to go through a criminal background screening process. The policy provides procedures to support its implementation at the division (CCO) and club level. Clubs are encouraged to implement the policy immediately and are required to have it fully implemented by September 1, 2011. The policy is linked from the left menu in the Admin Section.
